The Sanctuary – (Achievement Zone 2)
The young people felt that the use of this area should be predominantly for relaxing and reflecting. The room should provide a quiet and welcoming environment where they can remove themselves from their hectic lives and chill out.
With this in mind they felt that the way the room looked was highly important for achieving this outcome.
Sanctuary appearance
Furniture/ soft furnishings
- The young people did not like the chair selected within the furniture specification for achievement zone 2 – They mainly disliked the colour and style of the material.
- Hanging chairs – retro styling.
- Bean Bags.
- Textured rugs.
- Coffee style table.
- Big comfy looking chairs.
- No sofa style seating: all individual seats.
- Book shelves or side unit for storage of books etc.
- The crafting of a modern style cross maybe out of natural materials such as willow.
Lighting
- Multi sensory room: colour changing lights, lava lamps, bubble lamps or dimmer style lighting.
- Hanging globe style light fittings
Decoration
- Calming colours for the walls particularly blue and purple.
- Painted stars on the ceiling so when lights are dimmed or off it would be like looking up into the night sky.
- Canvas prints in a gallery style on the walls maybe of young people taking part in outdoor activities held at Bridgwater YMCA.
- On a feature wall have a giant picture (specially printed wall paper) of something that happens at the centre.
- Abstract style pictures.
The Cafe
The young people felt that the café area should look fresh, modern and welcoming to all ages. The young people also felt it was important that as the café is a mutli functioning environment (ICT area, eating area, chilling area and meeting style area) the areas should maintain its own identity through differences in furnishings. The design style most mentioned was RETRO. This should be considered when finalizing decoration and furniture specifications. Their general thoughts are as follows:
Furniture/ soft furnishings
- Chair 15 selected within the lounge furniture specification were considered groovy on account of the floral fabric print.
- Chair 17 was unique.
- The young people disliked chair 16 for reasons already highlighted within the sanctuary.
- The young people felt that chairs 22, 23 and 24 looked uncomfortable although they like the red colouring.
- A textured rug for the lounge area to help define this area as more comfortable.
- Animal and floral printed upholstery styles.
- Bright colours
- Liked the combination of red chairs and black tables for the café eating area.
- Mushroom looking shaped chairs for lounge area.
- Bean Bags
Lighting
- Hanging lighting in the café would create a luxury feel.
- Lots of eye catching feature lighting in retro style.
Decoration
- Decorative globes hanging at different lengths from the ceiling.
- Leather style wall padding around the TV to make more of a feature wall effect in meeting area.
- Make a statement by using bright colours – retro style wall paper
- Photo wall paper: One wall to be covered in specially printed wall paper which once up forms a picture of young people doing an activity like canoeing (print to be in black and white
